Chain pinion and wheel maintenance
Visual inspection:
1 – Check accurately that sizes of dented wheels correspond to those of chain.
2 – Verify profile of teeth : A – tip must be regular, not oriented in running direction (an indication that, when used, chain is stretched too tightly); B- sides must be symmetric.
3 – Verify outer sides of chain pinion and wheel in correspondence with teeth: a more accentuated wear on one side is an indication that dented wheel alignment is incorrect (defect is more evident on chain wheel than it is on pinion).
4 – Ascertain that chain wheel is non-eccentric when rotating (by making wheel turn speedily before mounting chain, or by measuring with a calliper, in several spots, distance between bore circumference and end of tooth) or not perfectly planar (by placing it on a plain or by superimposing it onto another crown and by checking possible deviations).
Controlling alignment:
Once pinion and crown have been mounted, check their alignment, which doesn’t always correspond to that of wheels of motorbike. Use a line about 1 metre long, place it on outer side of chain wheel and verify that it touches perfectly all outer side of pinion.
Other transmission components:
1 – Substitute fastening screws of chain wheel frequently. Always choose good quality elements. By using conical screws, ascertain their compatibility with countersink of holes of crown. Ergal or titanium screws must be treated, otherwise they ‘age’ before traditional ones.
2 – Also fastening elements of pinion are important: check that they haven’t been damaged through repeated assemblies and disassemblies.
3 – Verify that quality of elements on which chain runs (eye, chain tightener , and protection of fork) is good and that material they are made with is not exceedingly hard. Verify that they are adequate size-wise and placed correctly, in order not to jeopardise good running of chain while being used.
4 – Check levelness of chain wheel-carrier and efficiency of all components of back hub (bearings, packing, pin, clamps).
